League of Legends now has a smartphone app

Sometimes you need to step away from the PC and get some fresh air, which is hard because then you can't play video games. Riot Games is aware of this conundrum and has worked to make it a bit easier, with the release of a special League of Legends smartphone application called League Friends.

You can't play League of Legends with it, but there are a bunch of other useful features for people who take the game seriously. You're able to chat with people in your LoL friend list, and you can receive push notifications when someone has invited you to join a game. That's a pretty small offering, but Riot plans to expand its functionality as time goes on, presumably (or hopefully) with all manner of esports related stats.

The app is now available in North America and Oceania, with other regions to follow shortly after. You'll need either iOS 8.3 or Android 4.1.1 (or newer iterations of these) to run it

Forge offers a simple way to capture and share gameplay video

Forge, a new, free app designed to simplify the process of capturing and sharing gameplay videos, went into open beta today. And even though it's still technically in a pre-release state, I've played with it a bit, and it really works quite well.

The best thing about Forge is that it's easy. It runs in the background, and automatically kicks into gear when a game starts. A popup reminding you of its existence will appear at startup, and after a few seconds it goes away and you get on with your business. Gameplay clips of five to 30 seconds be cut and saved with a simple slider bar, either while you're playing or after you've quit, and then shared through the Forge website, Facebook, Twitter, and/or blogs and websites as embedded HTML.

It's clearly not intended to compete with full-blown video creation and editing tools, but as a way to show off highlight moments—like my smooth Race the Sun moves—I honestly can't imagine a simpler system that doesn't involve controlling your PC via telepathy. Both Nvidia and Microsoft offer similar services in the form of the GeForce Experience beta's Share and Xbox app's DVR (neither of these alternatives support telepathy, either).

The only downside to Forge's automation is that games must be on the Forge master list in order to work with it, something I ran up against the first time I tried to show off my mad Race the Sun skills. But a quick note to the development team had it (and Dungelot) added and working within a couple of hours.

"Forge is currently compatible with more than 2,000 games, with more added daily,” the studio said. “We want to ensure a high quality experience across all of our supported games. If a user runs into a game that is not supported they can contact the team at help@forge.gg."

Forge is available now at forge.gg, where you may also peruse a pile of gameplay clips—including at least one of mine in which I don't vaporize myself against a wall ten seconds out of the gate.

The first Doom level has been recreated in Unreal Engine 4

While Doom is 23 years old this year, it's still a beautiful game. That hasn't stopped Unreal Engine 4 user captain_slow48 from recreating the game's first level, as a means to gain familiarity with the engine. As the images above and below attest, the first map in Doom's first episode still looks aesthetically pleasing, and it's mainly the lighting advancements that make it look prettier in 2016.

According to the creator, the aim was "to be as faithful to the original aesthetic as possible, while adding some more details to the scenery". See a selection of the images below, but for the full set click through the the Unreal Engine forum page here.

In case you've been hibernating for the past year or so, id Software's own Doom reboot is releasing this May. If you fancy a taste of the 13-hour singleplayer campaign, there's some spliced through this Conan O'Brien TV spot.

Fallout 4 Survival Mode changes leak

More information about the changes coming to Fallout 4's Survival Mode have appeared on Reddit, thanks to the datamining efforts of a user by the name of ShaneD35. According to what he's found, Survival Mode will ensure that you die sooner, faster, more often, and for more reasons than ever before.

Bethesda subsequently confirmed on Twitter that the findings are legit, though alas there's no word on when it will be ready to go live.

'Superman Memory Crystal' Could Store Data for 13.8 Billion Years

Copies of the Magna Carta, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the King James Bible have now been digitally stored on a piece of glass known as a "Superman memory crystal" that has the capacity to save huge amounts of information for up to 13.8 billion years, researchers say.

Using a method of laser etching, researchers at the University of Southampton, in the United Kingdom, archived these documents, along with Isaac Newton's scientific treatise "Opticks," on coin-size pieces of glass. These tiny discs can survive for billions of years at temperatures of 374 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius). And at room temperature, they can last virtually forever, the researchers said.

"It is thrilling to think that we have created the technology to preserve documents and information and store it in space for future generations," Peter Kazansky, a professor at the university's Optoelectronics Research Centre, said in a statement. "This technology can secure the last evidence of our civilization; all we've learnt will not be forgotten." [Science Fact or Fiction? The Plausibility of 10 Sci-Fi Concepts]
